Honoring Every Bond: Animal Funerals & Companion Loss Support
Recently, several people have asked whether Going – My Way’s services extend to animal companions. The answer is a resounding yes!
The Deep History of Human–Animal Bonds
The human–animal bond reaches back at least 15,000 years, with dogs among our earliest companions and important partners in human development. Over time, people domesticated other species for protection, food, materials, and labor. Today, animals remain economically important while also serving as valued family members who meet emotional and social needs. These bonds are not limited to dogs and cats; they can also include birds, fish, rats, snakes, and lizards.
Navigating the Unique Pain of Pet Bereavement
A defining feature of animal bereavement is its emotional intensity. The bond between people and their animal companions is often unusually deep and sincere. An animal may be a trusted confidant and constant companion, offering unconditional love and a reassuring presence. Its death can therefore leave a profound void in a person’s heart and daily life. Others often minimize or dismiss this grief with insensitive remarks such as “It was only an animal” or “You can get another,” reflecting society’s limited understanding of pet loss. This lack of social validation is reinforced by animals’ legal classification as property. Although public attitudes increasingly recognize animals as sentient beings, the law has yet to fully reflect that shift. Another distinct aspect of animal loss is guilt, especially when someone must decide to euthanize a companion. Although made humanely, this choice often prompts painful questions: “Did I make the right decision?” and “Did I do everything I could for Fido or Fluffy?”
Why Animal Funerals and Rituals Matter for Healing
Rituals can help people navigate loss and grief, making a funeral or memorial service a meaningful way to honor an animal companion’s life. Including children in the ritual is also important because it supports their grieving process and allows them to express their emotions.
